A student who won a California court case against one of his teachers is now appealing the decision.
In April 2008, high school student Chad Farnan sued his history teacher Dr. James Corbett for violating his First Amendment rights and belittling his religion in front of the class on a regular basis. A judge ruled in Farnan's favor and, according to Advocates for Faith & Freedom, which represented Farnan, issued the first-ever decision of its kind. But now associate general counsel Jennifer Monk tells OneNewsNow their client is appealing that decision. "We, along with Chad, felt it was important to appeal the rest of the [teacher's] statements...that we believe are clearly hostile towards religion or towards conservative religious belief," she explains. "And this district court judge found that they were not and kind of dismissed all of those statements. "And while we're thrilled with the first ruling, we do feel that it can be strengthened and should be broader than it was." Corbett is also appealing the decision, and the school district is suing Farnan to recoup over $300,000 in court fees. Monk does not believe they have much of a chance to win. In the meantime, Farnan has delivered several speeches at GOP fundraising events and is calling for people to fight for their conservative rights.
