A federal judge has thrown out a Chicago lawsuit against Craigslist.
Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart filed the lawsuit based on the Internet site's ads for prostitution. Pat Trueman, special counsel for Alliance Defense Fund, believes the judge has issued a ruling that does not coincide with reality. "He suggests that Craigslist is without any liability whatsoever for hosting a portion of their website titled 'erotic' and another one called 'adult' that are filled with prostitution ads," Trueman explains. "Yet the judge says they have no responsibility for the ads that are placed there." Chicago officials are considering their next step. According to Trueman, among the possibilities is that of appeal. "Yes, I think this is a decision that ought to be appealed, but I would say that there are other judges who have done the same thing," Trueman argues. "They seem to bend over backwards to protect prostitution and Craigslist's involvement in it." The ruling only effects the states in the Chicago federal jurisdiction, but authorities can still prosecute the prostitutes who place the ads.
