The Christian Defense Coalition is calling for 19 days of prayer and fasting for president-elect Barack Obama.
For the first 19 days of 2009, the Christian Defense Coalition (CDC) will lead prayer for the president-elect outside the White House at noon. For those who cannot be in the nation's capital city, the CDC is asking people of faith to pray for Obama at noon in their homes, churches, and local communities nationwide. Reverend Pat Mahoney, president of the CDC, says scripture commands believers to pray for government leaders, regardless of party affiliation. "The Christian Defense Coalition had many serious challenges and issues with president-elect Obama," he notes. "But my reading of 1 Timothy (chapter) 2 doesn't say pray for leaders you agree with, or pray for leaders you voted for. It says pray for those, offer intercession, for those in authority." The group will use the 40-year-old inaugural prayer of Billy Graham as a model during their prayer time for president-elect Obama.
