The president of the public policy arm of the Southern Baptist Convention says people who didn't support Barack Obama can still celebrate the significance of his victory.
Dr. Richard Land, president of the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission (ERLC), believes that Christians who prayed about the election should not stop now. "We have a commandment in the Bible to pray for all of those who are in authority, so we certainly should commit to pray for president-elect Obama and for his family and to pray that God would give him guidance and direction," he contends. It speaks well for America, according to Dr. Land, that its people have elected the first black president. "Whatever our political persuasion and political conviction, we ought to stop and appreciate the fact that we have elected an African American as president of the United States," he adds. The ERLC spearheaded a 40-day prayer campaign leading up to the election.
