Teachers unions sense power in numbers

CensusAmerica's largest teachers unions are taking a controversial stance on the 2010 census.

The National Education Association and the American Federation of Teachers do not want the 2010 census to ask if participants are legal or lawful citizens of the United States. Kyle Olson, vice president of the Education Action Group Foundation, is surprised that these influential groups want to include illegal immigrants in the census.

Kyle Olson"I believe that will lead to chaos, inaccurate numbers, and that type of thing," predicts Olson. "And really, it's the fringe groups on the left that are calling for this policy, and it surprised me that the two national teachers unions were standing with those groups."

Taking such a stance is a curious move, leaving one to wonder how it would be beneficial.

"This all has to do with redistricting," Olsen explains. "And what will happen, I believe, is once those census numbers come out and are delivered to the states, they will redistrict congressional seats [and] state legislative seats, and the power will be shifted to those communities where Democrats have an edge....I think that's ultimately the objective here."
