Bubble Zone Protest (PLAL)Pro-life demonstrators in Chicago are defying a new "bubble zone" law outside abortion clinics.

Chicago recently passed a law that essentially exists to keep sidewalk counselors away from potential customers entering abortion facilities. Eric Sheidler, communications director of the Pro-Life Action League, voices his thoughts on the law. "It creates a very confusing scenario in which once you enter a 50-foot circle around the door of an abortion facility in the city of Chicago, you then have to get permission to approach closer than eight feet to another person," he explains.

Eric Scheidler (Pro-Life Action League)This law effectively creates a "bubble zone" around those who are entering abortion clinics, which prevents protestors from handing out pro-life literature and limits their counseling efforts.  Scheidler reports that the Pro-Life Action League conducted its first bubble-zone law protest at a northside Chicago Planned Parenthood that is well-known for lawsuits filed against it.

According to the pro-life activist, some of the cases they have encountered include "medical malpractice with a perforated uterus." Sheidler says, "We have a woman who was permanently sterilized because of a botched abortion. [There are] wrongful death suits. We had an RH factor blood test. There was no excuse for missing this, and this woman was badly injured by this failure on their part."

The bubble zone limits counselors' attempts to inform people of these cases, explains Scheidler. There were no arrests during the Tuesday demonstration. He notes a lawsuit is expected to be filed to declare the Chicago ordinance unconstitutional.
