A relief agency within the Southern Baptist Convention is noticing an increase in requests for assistance from Americans.
Most of the needs met by the North American Mission Board (NAMB) come from families and individuals who simply do not have enough to eat. The NAMB administers a Hunger Relief ministry that assists churches, associations and state conventions in sharing food and the gospel with those in need. Mike Ebert, spokesperson for NAMB, says requests increase during the holidays. "Some estimates show there are as many as 36 million Americans [who] deal with some kind of food insecurity in their lives at any given time," reports Ebert. "So there definitely are needs out there -- and in an economy like this, more and more people are having to turn to ministries like hunger ministries for help and assistance." Last year, the Domestic Hunger Fund program of the NAMB distributed more than $1.2 million to 2,200 hunger ministries.
