Focus on the Family James Dobson bigThe well-known ministry Focus on the Family is optimistic about the future, even though its founder will soon be stepping down as its public voice.

Dr. James Dobson, 73, announced last Friday that he will soon leave the daily radio broadcast of Focus on the Family. The announcement marks the final stage in a transition that has been taking place over a six-year period. In 2003, Dr. Dobson resigned as president of Focus on the Family, and as board chairman earlier this year.

Gary Schneeberger, a spokesman with the ministry, says the announcement does not mean the work of the ministry is finished.

"Will the voice on the radio be a different one? Yes," he says. "Will the principles, the counsel, the advice, the resources, those kinds of things that are being offered still be rooted in those same timeless truths? Absolutely -- and that's what makes us optimistic.

"God is in control of the ministry today as he was in 1977 when Dr. Dobson founded it."

Focus president and CEO Jim Daly expressed similar remarks in the press release announcing the transition in leadership. "Focus on the Family has never been about one man," he said. "That's why Dr. Dobson has always refused to have his name put on any building here. It's about doing the Lord's work in helping families."

Dr. Dobson's last broadcast will air at the end of February. The ministry says his departure is amicable and has nothing to do with health issues. He remains "a man of health and vigor," stated Daly.
