A new poll shows that most American adults don't think viewing Internet pornography is harmless.
The survey, conducted by Harris Interactive on behalf of Morality in Media, found overall that 76 percent of U.S. adults disagree that viewing hardcore pornography online is morally acceptable. Also, 74 percent do not view such material on the Internet as generally harmless entertainment. Bob Peters, president of Morality in Media, is encouraged by the results of the poll, "At one level, the Harris Interactive poll results confirm what I've believed and hoped and prayed for...many years now, which is that basically, people still do understand that there are some limits when it comes to sexuality, vulgarity [and] violence," says Peters. The study further found a large gap between men and women on their views concerning hardcore porn. "When it comes to males age 18 through 34, only 47 percent agreed both that it's morally unacceptable and harmful," Peters reports. "Comparing that [percentage] to young women [ages] 18 to 34, 73 percent of the younger women felt it wasn't acceptable to look at pornography and it wasn't harmless." Peters contends the results disprove the perception that most Americans find pornography acceptable.
