In an attempt to be "inclusive," Kentucky's governor has created a storm over a tree.
Governor Steve Beshear is calling for a giant evergreen tree on the Capitol lawn, announcing that it will be a "holiday tree" rather than a "Christmas tree." According to a spokesperson for the governor, the holiday tree is meant to be inclusive for Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah, and New Year's. Kent Ostrander of The Family Foundation in Lexington objects to the governor's political correctness. "It's really unfortunate because at the same time this governor is radically pushing gambling across the state -- so at this season of the year he wants to give the gift that keeps on taking: gambling -- at the same time he's removing Christmas and creating a 'holiday tree,'" says Ostrander. Some churches are taking notice as well. One of them is Clays Mill Road Baptist Church in Lexington. "He campaigned in front of his Baptist church and said I'm a Christian, this is where my wife and I were married, and this is where we are Christians," recalls Pastor Jeff Fugate. "And now all of a sudden when it comes to the easiest thing in the world to celebrate -- the Christian holiday [when] we celebrate the birth of the Lord Jesus Christ -- the governor says [he's] not going to use the word 'Christmas.'" The end result is that the governor's office has been inundated with phone calls and emails from people letting him know how they feel about Christ being taken out of the Christmas tree.
