The president of the first apologetics ministry offered by a sports ministry is sounding a warning over the International Olympic Committee (IOC) being granted observer status by the United Nations.
That decision was based on the IOC's contribution to the U.N.'s Millennium Development Goals. The U.N. secretary general, Ban Ki-moon of South Korea, has encouraged athletes and athletic leaders to promote the "global climate" treaty at the upcoming Copenhagen Climate Conference. (See related article) Steve McConkey, president of 4 WINDS Christian Athletics, the organization which operates Underground Apologetics, says the IOC has been associated with the U.N. for a while. He claims the international body is not friendly to Christianity. "What I see, for example, if you're in Olympic Village and you tell people that Jesus is the only way to salvation, they call that proselytizing. You'll be kicked out of Olympic Village," he reports. "So you cannot even say that Jesus Christ is the only way to God. That's why I've never become a chaplain in the Olympic Village, though I minister to a lot of athletes." McConkey says athletes should not be used by the IOC and the U.N. to advance policies that are not in the best interest of the United States and other countries.
