A noted entertainment critic and author says Christians are making a difference when it comes to the availability of family-friendly movies.
Ted Baehr is president of MovieGuide, a magazine and Internet site offering in-depth reviews of movies from a biblical perspective. Baehr says the box-office success of recent movies such as Facing the Giants, Fireproof, and The Passion of the Christ have shown Hollywood executives there is a market for movies with a biblical worldview. "The studios are fighting over [getting those] movies now -- and I get sent [release information about] one every couple of weeks," he shares. "It's fun getting other people's notices of the movies they brought out." According to the Christian media critic, makers of such films could potentially be rewarded financially. "We give out the $100,000 Templeton-funded Epiphany Prize for movies with Christian content, and there are more and more entries every year," he explains. "So now it's up to 44 percent of the movies have some positive reflection on Christianity." Dr. Baehr says believers can look forward to a new version of A Christmas Carol starring Jim Carrey coming out this winter. Recent winners (movie and television) of the Epiphany Prizes include Fireproof and The Christmas Choir (2009), Amazing Grace and The Valley of Light (2008), and The Nativity Story and The Ten Commandments (2007).
