Petitions have been submitted in Washington for a ballot measure to attempt to overturn a domestic partnership law passed by the state legislature.
Petitions were circulated in a short amount of time by signature gatherers who were often harassed. Larry Stickney, who heads Protect Marriage Washington, explains the next step in the process involves waiting. "We turned in 138,000 petitions, and we needed 120,577 valid signatures," says the marriage advocate. "So the Secretary of State here in Washington is in the process of counting and validating those signatures. It could take up to a couple of weeks here." At least two homosexual activist groups have threatened to post the names, addresses, and phone numbers of people who have signed the petition, and Stickney's family has been battered by the state's media. Stickney says they have filed suit. "[It appears] the judge is taking our lawsuit very seriously," he shares, "and we're happy to have a crack legal team on this that may set some precedent around the country for this type of thing where the opposition is getting so vicious in these homosexual 'marriage' cases around the country." In California, activists intimidated a number of people who signed petitions for Proposition 8 -- a voter initiative that was passed and which defines marriage in the traditional fashion. That led to a lawsuit in the Golden State.
