Voters prepare for DC version of Prop. 8

AIDS U.S. Capitol DCA Christian pastor in Washington, DC, says a recent legal setback will not deter him from pursuing a referendum on same-sex "marriage" in the nation's capital.

On Tuesday, the District of Columbia began to officially recognize same-sex marriages from other jurisdictions. Although the DC Board of Elections and the DC Superior Court recently rejected an effort led by Bishop Harry Jackson, Jr., to put the same-sex marriage recognition bill up for a referendum, Jackson says he merely lost the opening battle of what will be a long fight.

Bishop Jackson, chairman of the High Impact Leadership Coalition, will soon be filing paperwork to launch a voter initiative, similar to California's Proposition 8, that would affirm marriage between a man and a woman in DC.

Bishop Jackson"The reality is we've got to start now. We need help from the grassroots. We need finance. We need volunteers coming in. We need people who are going to start the battle to collect the signatures at the end of the summer," he says. "So, all of that has to happen right now."

Jackson would need the signatures of 21,000 registered DC voters -- approximately five percent of the voting public in the District -- to get the initiative on the November 2010 ballot.
