A Christian activist says many people don't realize the true nature of a proposed "hate crimes" bill.
Last month, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a hate crimes bill (H.R. 1913) that would extend federal protection to homosexual and transgender victims. Regina Griggs is president of Parents and Friends of Ex-Gays and Gays, or PFOX. She says the bill will jeopardize free speech if it becomes law. "The ex-gay community will be under fire. We are under fire now," Griggs believes. "I'm beginning to think that I know every major Christian law firm in this country, just because I want people to know change is possible and give you your right to self-determination. There will be no rights." The Federal Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 2009 is now before the Senate (S. 909).
