adoptionBethany Christian Services, the nation's largest adoption agency, is reporting a higher interest in adoptions.

The increases have been recorded for both domestic and international adoptions, according to special relations specialist and spokesman John VanValkenburg.

"Bethany Christian Services is very excited to report that our adoption programs have seen an increase of 26 percent for the year 2010, and that's an increase over the first six months of 2009," he shares.

One of the reasons for the higher figures, he says, is because the Christian community has seen more of a focus on adoption. VanValkenburg gives a few examples of groups that have incorporated the issue into their programs.

"The Catalyst Conference for Young Pastors, or Saddleback Church out in California, the Southern Baptist denomination focused on adoption at their conference," the spokesman lists. "The Christian Alliance for Orphans has a number of events that focus on adoption. So we've just kind of seen this movement towards increasing awareness about adoption."

International placements were up by 66 percent, but VanValkenburg attributes that to the number of children left without parents after the earthquake in Haiti.
