Holding out hope for Methodism

The president of a religious watchdog group says conservative United Methodists can overcome a move to take the denomination down a very liberal path.

Mark TooleyIn a recent "UMAction Briefing," Mark Tooley, president of the Institute on Religion & Democracy, highlighted a recent meeting of the liberal organization known as Reconciling Congregations.

During that meeting, Rev. David Weekly, pastor of a United Methodist church outside Portland, was honored for being transparent about his sex-change operation in the 1970s. And two years ago, the former Rev. Ann Gordon became Rev. Drew Phoenix after a sex-change operation.

Tooley says the issue is not going to go away. "It's part of a larger movement in the churches and outside the churches that goes under the label of 'omnigender,' [which claims] that gender is completely fluid and self-determined."

Conservative members of the United Methodist Church, says Tooley, must be vigilant when it comes to defending biblical standards in the denomination.
